According to the final revision by the National Statistics Institute, the GDP grew by 2.8% as a whole last year, positioning Spain as one of the most dynamic developed economies on the planet. The revision shows the same figure as the provisional advance and stands eight tenths below the growth of 2024. Quarterly GDP recorded an increase of 0.8% in the fourth quarter compared to the previous one, two tenths higher than expected by analysts.<\/p>\n<p><b>The advance in gross domestic product was largely driven by domestic demand, which contributed 3.5 points. In a year marked by the tariff war coming from the United States and a retreat of globalization, external demand contracted Spain&#8217;s GDP by 0.8 percentage points. In 2024, external demand contributed 0.2 points to Spain&#8217;s GDP.<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b>CONSTRUCTION PROGRESSES STRONGLY<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Exports of non-tourist services were the component of demand that brought the greatest dynamism to the economy, with an increase of 11.7%. Since the pandemic, Spain has been consolidating itself as an important power in the field of high value-added services, decoupling the tertiary sector economy from its heavy reliance on tourism, which is highly vulnerable to external factors such as geopolitical or economic crises.<\/p>\n<p><b>On the supply side, gross value added advanced in all economic areas. Construction stands out, which increased by 5.6%, confirming forecasts from industry associations, such as the cement industry. At the beginning of 2025, cement companies expected a surge in raw material demand due to a revitalization of construction driven by the housing crisis, the development of energetic and technological industrial infrastructures such as data centers, and public investments.<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b>EXTENSIVE GROWTH<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>What causes the advance in domestic production? Spain continues to show extensive growth in employment, but not an improvement in productivity. Therefore, the economy is growing not so much because we are more efficient at work, but because there are more of us working. This means that there is no widespread improvement in the well-being or prosperity of citizens despite the macroeconomic progress.<\/p>\n<p><b>INE data support this thesis. The number of hours actually worked grew by 2.2% year-on-year in the fourth quarter, four tenths less than during the summer. Full-time equivalent jobs increased by 2.8% year-on-year, five tenths less than in the previous quarter. However, the problem lies in growth per worker. The INE estimates that productivity per full-time equivalent job contracted by 0.1% year-on-year, although productivity per hour actually worked advanced by 0.5%.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>If we continue digging into the pillars that make up Spain&#8217;s GDP, the trend of an extensive economy continues to send signals to keep in mind for both workers and business owners. Final consumption expenditure advanced by 3% year-on-year, the main element of strength for the Spanish economy. Households increased their spending by 3.1% while Public Administrations advanced by 2.5%. Gross capital formation, i.e., gross investment in the economy, recorded an increase of 5.9%.<\/p>\n<p><b>All in all, Spain is establishing itself as one of the most dynamic developed powers due to its extensive growth. The quarterly advance of 0.8% in the fourth quarter is four times higher than that of the European Union and stands above the G20 average, according to OECD data.
