{"id":11986,"date":"2026-06-12T15:09:49","date_gmt":"2026-06-12T14:09:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sedanoc.rwdesarrollos2.es\/actualidad\/ine-confirms-may-inflation-at-3-2-and-raises-core-inflation-by-one-tenth-to-3\/"},"modified":"2026-06-12T15:09:49","modified_gmt":"2026-06-12T14:09:49","slug":"ine-confirms-may-inflation-at-3-2-and-raises-core-inflation-by-one-tenth-to-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sedanoc.rwdesarrollos2.es\/en\/actualidad\/ine-confirms-may-inflation-at-3-2-and-raises-core-inflation-by-one-tenth-to-3\/","title":{"rendered":"INE CONFIRMS MAY INFLATION AT 3.2% AND RAISES CORE INFLATION BY ONE TENTH, TO 3%"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><b><i>The National Statistics Institute (INE) has confirmed that the consumer price index (CPI) for May remained at 3.2% year-on-year, while it has revised core inflation (excluding energy and fresh food) upward by one-tenth, to 3%, two-tenths higher than in April.<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This price trend occurs in a context of high uncertainty and volatility in energy prices due to the war in Iran and with the Government&#8217;s fiscal measures still in force, since they began to be phased out on June 1.<\/p>\n<p><b>The group with the greatest positive influence on May inflation was recreation, sports, and culture, with an annual rate of 2.6%, nearly two points above that of last month, mainly due to a smaller drop in the prices of tourist packages.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The transport group also pushed upward, with its rate rising by nearly one point to 7.4%, due to the increased cost of passenger transport by air, compared to a decrease in the same month of the previous year.<\/p>\n<p><b>This upward pressure was offset by the performance of the clothing and footwear group, whose annual rate fell by 1.1%, 2.5 points below that of the previous month, due to cheaper clothing items, which had risen in May 2025, and by the food and non-alcoholic beverages group, which placed its annual variation at 2.2%, four-tenths below that of the previous month.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>This behavior was influenced by the price trends of fruits and tree nuts, which rose less than in May 2025, and of vegetables, legumes, and potatoes, which fell more than in May last year.<\/p>\n<h3><b>FUELS UP 49%, ELECTRICITY DOWN 5.5%<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Liquid fuels became 48.8% more expensive in May, due to the persistent impact of the Middle East conflict on international markets, while electricity fell by 5.5% and natural gas by 9.7%.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Business indicates in a statement that the Response Plan and &#8220;Spain&#8217;s commitment to renewables and energy sovereignty constitutes a shield against the impact of the war in Iran.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><b>Thus, the drop in electricity and natural gas prices has allowed the deactivation of measures regarding the special tax on electricity and the VAT applicable to electricity and natural gas, briquettes, pellets, and firewood to begin on June 1, although the measures on the tax on the value of electrical energy production continue until June 30.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Likewise, the rest of the sector-specific measures, such as aid to farmers and carriers, as well as the reinforced discounts of the social electricity bonus, of 42.5% for vulnerable consumers and 57.5% for severely vulnerable consumers, remain in place.<\/p>\n<h3><b>LEGUMES AND VEGETABLES RISE BY MORE THAN 15%<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>The price of food and non-alcoholic beverages increased by 2.2% year-on-year and unprocessed foods by 3.2%, although some products showed increases of over 10%, such as green, fresh, or chilled legumes (16.3%), vegetables cultivated for their fruit, fresh or chilled (15.2%), eggs (13.7%), and beef (12.3%).<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Leaving the food sector aside, the items that increased the most in price compared to a year earlier were liquid fuels, up 48.8%; jewelry and wristwatches, up 27.2%; garbage collection, up 26.6%; combined passenger transport, up 26.6%; and passenger air transport, up 25.5%.<\/p>\n<p><b>On the opposite end, the largest drops in May were recorded for tropical fruits, down 18.2%; butane and propane, down 15.4%; natural gas, down 9.7%; other fresh fruits, down 9%; and audiovisual equipment, down 6.7%.<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b>MONTHLY INFLATION WAS 0.4%<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>In monthly comparison, consumer prices increased by 0.1% compared to April, and the group with the highest positive impact was restaurants and accommodation services, while transport and recreation, sports, and culture pushed downward.<\/p>\n<p><b>The largest price increases in May were for air transport (17.1%) and other fresh fruits (11.9%), while the largest drops were for vegetables, down 14.4%, and legumes, down 13.4%, according to details from the INE.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The CPI recorded positive annual rates in all autonomous communities in April: Madrid presented the highest rate (3.8%) and Extremadura the lowest, at 2.5%.<\/p>\n<p><b>In the month of May, the annual variation rate of the HICP stood at 3.6%, one-tenth higher than that recorded the previous month.
