SPAIN SURPASSES 22.5 MILLION DAILY AFFILIATES IN JUNE AND REINFORCES THE SUMMER CAMPAIGN

  • Social Security affiliation kicks off June with a new high in the daily series, exceeding 22.5 million average contributors for the first time in the first fortnight

  • The milestone comes on the doorstep of summer, a key period for hiring in hospitality and services, although we will have to wait for the monthly closing to confirm if this level consolidates

JUNE PREVIEW AND RECORD IN THE DAILY SERIES

According to advance data provided by the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security, and Migration, so far in June 165,075 employed people have been added, and the total number of average contributors exceeds 22.5 million for the first time in the daily series.

However, this level was only reached on Monday, June 15, within the shared data, so the evolution over the coming weeks will be decisive in checking whether the trend is maintained until the end of the month. The Minister of Inclusion, Social Security, and Migration, Elma Saiz, states that this is a historic figure reflecting the transformation of the labor market since the labor reform and its translation into more and better employment.

In the seasonally adjusted series, which discounts the effect of the calendar and campaigns such as summer or Christmas, the increase is 80,561 affiliates in the last two fortnights. With this, the total number of affiliates in that measurement stands at 22.1 million.

SEASONAL BOOST IN HOSPITALITY AND SERVICES

The evolution in June matches the usual pattern of the Spanish labor market, as companies, especially in hospitality and services, begin to reinforce their workforces ahead of the summer holidays. This behavior usually intensifies during these weeks and explains part of the jump observed in the original series.

The previous months already show a solid pace of job creation. In April, the threshold of 22 million contributors was crossed for the first time, and in May, average affiliation exceeded 22.3 million for the first time, after adding 231,975 contributors in the second-best month of May in the historical series, driven mainly by the 66,000 jobs created in hospitality. Furthermore, in the daily series for May, the figure already exceeded 22.4 million between the 25th and 28th, pointing to a continuation of the labor momentum heading into the summer.

In our previous publication on the integration of contribution gaps in the calculation of retirement pensions, we explained how Social Security will cover non-contributing periods starting from 2026 to smooth their impact on the regulatory base, with specific rules for women and a more limited scope for the self-employed. We also recalled the role of contributions and surcharges such as the MEI in the financing and sustainability of the system, a framework that directly connects with the recent evolution in the number of affiliates.
