CONSUMER PRICE INDEX (CPI). HARMONIZED INDEX OF CONSUMER PRICES (HICP). FEBRUARY 2026

MAIN RESULTS

  • The annual variation rate of the CPI in the month of February stood at 2.3%, the same as that recorded in January
  • The annual rate of core inflation increased by one tenth, to 2.7%
  • The monthly variation of the overall index was 0.4%
  • The Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) set its annual rate at 2.5%, one tenth above the previous month
  • The annual rate of the overall Consumer Price Index (CPI) in the month of February was 2.3%, the same as that recorded the previous month

The group that stood out the most for its negative influence on the annual rate was:

Housing, which set its annual variation at 1.9%, eight points below that of last month. This behavior was due to the decrease in electricity prices, which had risen in February 2025.

Among the groups with a positive influence, the following stood out:

Restaurants and accommodation services, whose annual rate increased by three tenths, to 4.8%. This increase was due to the rise in prices for restaurants and accommodation services, which was greater than that recorded in February of the previous year.

Food and non-alcoholic beverages, with a rate of 3.2%, two tenths higher than the previous month. This evolution was mainly due to the stability of the prices of oils and fats and of fish and seafood, compared to the decreases in the same month of 2025.

The annual variation rate of core inflation (overall index excluding unprocessed food and energy products) stood at 2.7%, one tenth higher than the previous month.

The groups with the greatest positive monthly impact on the monthly rate of the CPI were:

Restaurants and accommodation services, with a monthly variation of 0.9%, due to price increases in restaurants and accommodation services. This group had an impact of 0.162 on the overall CPI.

Transport, with a rate of 0.8%, mainly as a consequence of the price increase in fuels and lubricants for personal vehicles. This group had an impact of 0.122 on the overall CPI.

Food and non-alcoholic beverages, with a rate of 0.6% and an impact of 0.101 due to the rise in prices of fruit and nuts, as well as vegetables, pulses, and potatoes.

The CPI recorded positive annual rates in all autonomous communities in February:

The Community of Madrid presented the highest rate (2.9%) and the Principality of Asturias, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, and La Rioja presented the lowest (2.0% all of them).

Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP):

In the month of February, the annual variation rate of the HICP stood at 2.5%, one tenth more than that recorded the previous month.
